Starting an IMPACT! group

Each IMPACT! Group consists of 6-12 young people and an interested adult who meet on a weekly basis for approximately one hour. Before starting a group, you as Animator/Chaplain need to be clear as to the vision of the IMPACT! Movement.

  • IMPACT! is run by young people themselves.
  • It is a National Movement, not isolated groups.
  • The most important aspect of the programme is the weekly meeting.
  • Here members receive training as leaders through taking Responsibility and Action.
  • Action is the hallmark of IMPACT!, it is not a talk shop.
  • Through the Local, Regional and National Structure, young people are given the opportunity to meet their peers from around the country.
  • IMPACT! should be an enjoyable, worthwhile experience.

Making Contact

The most successful IMPACT! Groups are formed through personal contact. Make a list of the young people who you think would be suited to the IMPACT! Programme and invite them personally.

In choosing the venue keep in mind that you are organising a meeting not an activity. The meeting room should consist of a table where the young people can sit around, with facilities for making tea or coffee after the meeting.

How can we set up a group?

  • Ask people individually, personal contact is always the best way.
  • Write a brief article for the parish/school newsletter.
  • Announcements at Mass/Assembly (say a few words inviting young people to the next meeting).
  • Design a poster to attract new members.
