Using the IMPACT! pack

The IMPACT! resource pack aims to introduce young people to IMPACT! through an exploration of a range of issues which are of relevance to them. The programme material contains information and discussion plans on many issues relating to the lives of young people. Issue sheets are informative and user friendly and have been written in consultation with young people.

What's in the pack?

The IMPACT! pack contains enquiries (discussions) on many different subjects which have been designed to enable young people to explore an issue of concern in a fun way, debate it and plan actions to bring about change.

Each session will provide your IMPACT! group with enough information to get the discussion flowing, however feel free to add your own questions, activities, suggestions or ideas. IMPACT! is your Movement, you make the decisions, you are what makes it work!

Method

Before each session, make sure everyone is aware of the topic under discussion in advance. This enables everyone to bring along their own information or facts to help get the best from the session. For some sessions you may need to bring along materials for the activities, be sure to read the "Before you start" section in the IMPACT! pack at the beginning of each session for information on what you'll need.

The sessions are laid out in a particular way. Throughout the programme you will see the word "analysis"; this is basically another word for the discussion section of the session. The method used in the analysis is the See, Judge, Act, Review method developed by Joseph Cardijn, founder of the YCW Movement.

In each session you will find information on what you will need in "before you start", also an "activity" or two to help you explore the issue and a section entitled "analysis" which consists of a list of questions to help you look at each issue in depth. Each session should encourage the group/individuals to take some form of action to bring about change. Ideas for possible actions are included under "Action Stations" at the end of each session.

Review

Reviewing is an important aspect of the IMPACT! programme, each session should be reviewed at the end in order to ascertain how the group felt about the particular session, what they got out of it, what they feel they would change or do differently etc. It is important also to Review each action taken in order to learn from your experiences. The following questions should help in your review:

  • Did the action taken improve things for us, for others?
  • Did we/I learn anything new through this Action?
  • If I/we were to take this or another action again what would I/we do differently?

Once you have completed the programme you should carry out a review of your entire IMPACT! experience.
