Community

 

No individual can exist in isolation. This is particularly true of young people. A glance over recent trends shows how young people group together, creating a sense of belonging, often simply by the clothes they wear or the music they listen to. Young people strive for belonging in community. Moreover, we all belong to multiples communities: family communities; work or study communities; communities of friends; local neighbourhoods. Some we choose to belong to, others we don't. Every community has its own character, with unique relationships, opportunities, challenges and responsibilities.

 

 

Work

 

Live or work or work to live? We will all undertake a variety of jobs, from part-time to full-time to voluntary. Some jobs we do are simply to earn money and some jobs are more of a vocation in life for us. Other things we devote time to simply because we are passionate about them.

 

 

YCW and Church

 

What does it mean to be a Christian? How do YCW members see Church and religion?

 

 

Education

 

What are we educated for? Is our education purely to train us for the world of work and to provide the skills that employers need or is it to enable people to live their life fully?

 

 

Money

 

We are all parts of a consumer society, a society that encourages us to "spend, spend, spend!". Sometimes that society seems to say, "It's ok to spend more money than you have, it doesn't matter, just get a loan". We are exposed to pressures to buy certain, usually expensive, products because of the media and advertising. But what does it mean to us as young people living in a consumer society?

 

 

What is "Challenge to Lead"?

 

Challenge to Lead is a programme developed by Young Christian Workers which helps you to form a group of leaders. The Challenge to Lead booklet and DVD were created by YCW members, and other young people, from England, Ireland and Malta. The DVD shows young people discussing their concerns, sharing their experience and imaginatively presenting some scripture texts to help reflection.
