May Day - Feast of St. Joseph the Worker

On Friday 1st of May 2009 we celebrated the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, our Patron Saint, with a special Mass in St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral in the centre of Dublin. Main Celebrant for the Mass was YCW National Chaplain, Fr. Eoin McCrystal who was joined by Spiritan Father and Chaplain to the Brazilian Community., Fr. Pat McNamara. The Mass took place at lunch time in order to allow workers in the city centre attend and still have time to grab a bite to eat.
In his Homily Fr. Eoin spoke of the dignity of work and the worker and of the Churches need to speak out in their defence at all times. He also made reference to the current employment situation in Ireland and how we as a community of Faith cannot be indifferent to the realities of those around us. In the Prayers of the Faithful, which were read by SIPTU representative Kevin Glackin and YCW National Co-ordinator, Vicky Rattigan, prayers were offered for those who have come to Ireland in the hope of finding work, for those who are faced with unemployment and for all those who have lost their lives during the course of their work.
The Mass was very well attended and leaflets on YCW and Workers Rights and entitlements (in various languages) were available at the back of the Church.
Special thanks must go to Fr. John Flaherty P.P. for the opportunity for us to celebrate our Feast Day in the Pro-Cathedral and to all those who participated on the day.
May all workers regardless of age, sex or nationality be treated with respect and dignity always.
